Cheri Samba
If I had lots of money to spare it would be spent on a piece of art by Cheri Samba.
Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1956 he left his village at 16 to go to Kinshasa and become a sign painter. His painting skills developed and in 1976 he opened his own studio gaining local recognition and illustrating for the entertainment magazine Bilenge Info. In 1989 he participated in an exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou entitled Les Magiciens de la Terre and he became known internationally.
He was invited to show at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and his work is also on show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
His paintings almost always include text in French and Lingala, commenting on life in Africa and the modern world.
